A Bouquet of Sensations

Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Sassicaia stands out for its extraordinarily complex and layered aromatic profile. On the nose, delicate notes of aromatic herbs and sweet spices, such as cinnamon and cloves, blend harmoniously with a rich red fruit character. Dominant scents of redcurrant, blueberry, pomegranate, and Rainier cherry are enhanced by an intriguing hint of old rose that emerges over time.

TENUTA SAN GUIDO

Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the XI century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, between Leghorn and Grosseto, in Maremma an area made famous by Italian Nobel prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and it stretches for 13 km from the sea to the hills.

Three are its defining characteristics: the Sassicaia wine, the Razza Dormello-Olgiata thoroughbred studfarm and the Bird Sanctuary Padule di Bolgheri. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse's training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 meters on the hills. The latter have been given their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained in one estate.

SASSICAIA

In the 1920s the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamt of creating a ‘thoroughbred’ wine and for him, as for all the aristocracy of the time, the ideal was Bordeaux. In the 1940s, having settled with his wife Clarice on the Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties (whose cuttings he had recovered from the estate of the Dukes Salviati in Migliarino) and concluded that the Cabernet had "the bouquet I was looking for."

A wine made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon was a fundamental change to the Tuscan and Piedmont tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, respectively. The innovative decision to plant this variety at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity Mario Incisa had noted between Tuscan terrain and that of Graves in Bordeaux. ‘Graves’, or ‘gravel’ in French refers to the rocky terrain which distinguishes the Bordeaux area; similarly, the gravely vineyard sites in Tuscany impart the same characteristics on Sassicaia, "stony ground", as its cherished French brother.

The Marchese's first vintages were not warmly received. Critics accustomed to light, local wines were not encouraging; it was not taken into consideration that wines made from the more complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape would need more time to mature and develop.

And thus from 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a strictly private affair, only to be consumed at Tenuta San Guido. It was not until 1968 that Sassicaia was first commercially released – the welcome was worthy of a Bordeaux Premier Cru.

Description: “I Sistri” Felsina is made from Chardonnay grapes grown in the vineyards of the Tenuta di Farnetella, which were planted in the early 2000s using French grafts. The vines are trained using the Guyot system and are carefully monitored throughout the year. Harvesting is strictly manual and carried out in small crates. After a gentle pressing of the grapes, the must ferments in French oak barriques with daily bâtonnage. The final aging phase lasts 12 months and takes place on fine lees in barriques. At the end of this period, the wine is bottled.  Best enjoyed at 8-10°C

SASSICAIA 2022, Tenuta San Guido, Toscana
Vitigni: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon e 15% Cabernet Franc

Uno dei segreti del clima mediterraneo e ventoso di Bolgheri è quello di trasformare le pirazine dei Cabernet in profumi extradimensionali di cedro e aromi fogliari. Sassicaia produce vini a base di Cabernet qui dal 1968, che si distinguono tipicamente per questa freschezza al naso.

C'è una nota di scorza di kiwi particolarmente intensa in questo 2022, insieme a un po' di cedro. In questa annata, il suo carattere è - se possibile - più contenuto del solito e decisamente più dell'eccezionale 2015. Piccoli frutti scuri si nascondono nella profondità del naso super-giovane, mentre al palato il vino non è completamente pronto da bere: nonostante la buona integrazione del rovere, i tannini sono ancora croccanti, perfettamente maturi ma masticabili, sostenuti da una vivace acidità. Un Sassicaia estremamente elegante con un finale raffinato, costruito per durare ed è probabilmente il migliore di questo decennio.

GUIDALBERTO 2022, Tenuta San Guido, Toscana 
Varietà d'uva: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
Il vino si caratterizza per l'ottima rotondità e morbidezza, con una densità senza spigolosità. Già al palato si percepiscono l'eccellente corposità e il grande equilibrio con una persistenza persistente. L'importante contenuto polifenolico di questo vino lascia presagire un'eccellente longevità.

LE DIFESE 2022
Dalla Tenuta San Guido, Produttore del Sassicaia, un vino unico da bere tutti i giorni  

Le Difese (Toscana IGT) è prodotto dalla Tenuta San Guido dal 2003.

Si tratta di un blend composto al 70% da Cabernet e al 30% da Sangiovese.

La fermentazione avviene in vasche di acciaio inox a temperatura controllata e la macerazione dura circa 12 giorni sia per il Cabernet Sauvignon che per il Sangiovese. L'affinamento avviene poi per 12 mesi in botti di rovere francese e americano e per ulteriori tre mesi in bottiglia.

Il vino si distingue per una buona struttura ed è estremamente morbido, il che lo rende molto piacevole e beverino.

TENUTA SAN GUIDO

La Tenuta San Guido prende il nome da San Guido della Gherardesca, vissuto nell'XI secolo. Si trova sulla costa tirrenica, tra Livorno e Grosseto, nella Maremma, zona resa celebre dal premio Nobel Giosuè Carducci, e si estende per 13 km dal mare alle colline.

Tre sono i suoi elementi distintivi: il vino Sassicaia , l' allevamento di cavalli purosangue Razza Dormello-Olgiata e l'Oasi Ornitologica Padule di Bolgheri . La tenuta si divide tra il Padule sulla costa, i campi di allenamento dei cavalli in pianura e i vigneti piantati fino a 350 metri sulle colline. A questi ultimi è stata assegnata una DOC, la DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, il primo e finora unico caso in Italia di una DOC racchiusa in un'unica tenuta.

Il matrimonio di Mario Incisa della Rocchetta e Clarice della Gherardesca il 18 ottobre 1930 diede inizio a tutto.

Condividevano la passione per i cavalli purosangue, che li spinse a collaborare con l'allevatore e addestratore Federico Tesio. L'amore di Mario Incisa per il buon vino lo spinse a piantare viti di Cabernet nel 1942 per quello che sarebbe diventato il Sassicaia. Diciassette anni dopo, l'Oasi Ornitologica di Bolgheri diventa la prima riserva naturale privata d'Italia.

I vigneti

I vigneti della Tenuta San Guido si estendono per circa 90 ettari e sono suddivisi in aree scelte per le particolari caratteristiche sia di esposizione che di composizione del terreno.

Alcune viti sono piantate in collina, ad un'altitudine che varia dai 200 ai 300 metri slm.

Ad esempio, i vigneti di San Martino e Mandrioli sono a ridosso delle colline nella zona centrale della tenuta, mentre i restanti si trovano più in basso, a circa 80 metri slm.

Il clima è fondamentale per una corretta e sana maturazione delle uve. È influenzato dal mare e dalle colline che proteggono la tenuta dai venti dell'entroterra.

La posizione dei vigneti, in zone e altitudini diverse, è un fattore determinante nella complessità dei vini e offre un'ampia scelta per la vendemmia, a seconda delle condizioni meteorologiche e della maturazione delle uve. Questo è stato recentemente dimostrato da uno studio dell'Università di Pisa che ha evidenziato l'unicità dei vigneti della Tenuta San Guido per tipologia di terreno ed esposizione, rispetto al territorio circostante.

I vigneti producono circa 55-60 quintali ( 5500-6000 kg) per ettaro. Il sistema di allevamento e la bassa resa di uva per ceppo, danno un prodotto sano e ricco di zuccheri, tannini ed estratti.

TENUTA SAN GUIDO

Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the XI century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, between Leghorn and Grosseto, in Maremma an area made famous by Italian Nobel prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and it stretches for 13 km from the sea to the hills.

Three are its defining characteristics: the Sassicaia wine, the Razza Dormello-Olgiata thoroughbred studfarm and the Bird Sanctuary Padule di Bolgheri. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse's training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 meters on the hills. The latter have been given their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained in one estate.

If Mario Incisa, creator of Sassicaia, was inspired by his great-uncle Leopoldo Incisa della Rocchetta, then his son Nicolò, director of Tenuta San Guido since forty years, has been motivated by Guidalberto della Gherardesca his great great great grandfather.
The latter, who lived in the early nineteenth century in Bolgheri was a pioneer of modern agriculture, and is famous for having planted the cypress alley that inspired the poet Giosuè Carducci.

Nicolò Incisa explains thus the choice of the name and creation of new wine in 2000:
"The wine was created for two reasons:
First of all, the desire to see what we could accomplish with Merlot, a grape that we had never used before; second, the desire to offer the consumer a wine which could be appreciated at a younger age compared to our veteran Sassicaia”.
